101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads Reviews

101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads by Heather Shepard is a great resource for anyone that is thinking about starting an at home business. The benefits of an at home business are growing larger every day and this book shows how one can make a success out of working at home.
The way Ms. Shepard organizes the book makes it very easy to follow and utilize. She takes the reader systematically through the processes of selecting a business, setting up a home office, making a business plan, finance options and advertising. I found the chapter on self-evaluation to be a valuable tool. In this chapter, Ms. Shepard has the reader ask themselves the hard questions to determine if they are truly ready to start their own business and to find out what direction would be the best to take. This aspect of the book shows that it is not a scheme to become a millionaire overnight. Instead, this publication is a serious guidebook shows the reader their strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the book provides the reader with resources to strengthen their skills if they need to.
I feel that this book is not just a guide to starting a business, but also one that is a reference in order to keep a home based business on track. Finally there is a book that gives the aspiring entrepreneur helpful and practical advice in plain straightforward language.

While the title indicates it was written for stay-at-home moms and dads, almost everyone can benefit from this book. Heather Shepherd designed a book for individuals who wish to supplement their income, while caring for small children and working from a home office. Shepherd spends considerable time focused on the self-evaluation aspect of starting a business. Here, she presents self-evaluation guides, checklists and advice if your skills are weak.
Shepherd supplies charts and questions to ensure individuals choose the correct home-based business. The actual business suggestions are divided into two categories based on start-up costs:

Home-Based Business For Dummies Reviews

If you’re completely clueless to running your own home-based business, this is a great beginner (hence the title “for Dummies”). I found the book to work best when you already have an idea for your business. As with similar books, it’s great to have a general idea of what type of business you’d like to pursue before reading the book; it will help you better shape your idea. The book did spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with family problems, creating a quiet workspace, setting work hours and how to get through a project when you have no desire. While some people might find this beneficial, it read like “filler” to me.All in all, though, it’s worth checking out.

I would classify this book as more of a general overview of all the important things you need to consider before actually starting your business. For particulars you will definitely want to contact a good business attorney and a good accountant. Not to mention, you’ll need to interface a lot initially with your local city/state governments to get tax forms and your business license.
This book seems to work best if you already have an idea for your business. Granted , they do throw out a few ideas for things like medical billing and place an emphasis on what could be described as services geared towards either elderly folks, or dual income families who are too busy to deal with traditional family type things. If you already kind of know what you think you want to try, this book will primarily help you fine tune your thoughts, and bring them to reality.
The section on Managing Money is probably one of the best things anyone can read. Obviously, if you’re in business, the goal is to make money. By understanding the basic accounting principles presented in Part II of the book, you’ll be well on your way to managing your business money wisely.
For general knowledge, my favorite part of the book was Part V. Here you will find Top 10 lists that describe common myths and pitfalls, and even success producing ideas to help you on your journey as a home based business owner. If you have a family, you’ll want to take note on the section about what I would call, “The good way to set up your office.” Which means, keeping distractions from the spouse and kids to a minimum while you are working at home.
There is a section on marketing, but in lieu of just that section alone, I would definitely recommend “Guerilla Marketing” by Jay Conrad Levinson. It’s a very dry read, but there are a lot of interesting and unique ideas for getting word out about your business with out spending much (if any) money. And when you’re in business for yourself, the more advertising you can get for free, the better!
I really like the way the authors describe how to get in to the home based business. Meaning, the idea of working at your full-time job (which you may or may not like) while you test the waters with your own venture on the side. That’s excellent advice because if your business idea doesn’t take off, you’re not stuck without any income. Plus you can stay under your current employer’s medical plan (A HUGE money saver!)
Overall there is so much information in here, it will be hard to take it in all at once. Likewise, as I stated earlier, the most important thing to remember is make sure and check with a professional accountant and lawyer in your area before/as you get started so they can help walk you through the particulars in your area. Every city and state is different in terms of setting up a business when it comes to taxes and getting your license.
Bottom line is, if you are semi-seriously considering starting a home based business, do yourself a favor and pick up this book and read it through. You’ll get some good advice and knowledge on what it takes to be your own boss. Of course the other thing you can do is, talk to other small business owners in your area. Take them to lunch and learn as much as you can from those who are successful small business owners.

Home Business Tax Deductions: Keep What You Earn Reviews

I wish I’d had this before I started my business. Plain english explanations and chock full of good tips. This book more than paid for itself the first day!
If you are starting a business in your home, you NEED this book. Especially if you find TAX laws confusing this will be an immense help. Preferably read it before you officially start. It will save you a bundle.
Indexing is excellent; very easy to find what you want and the explanations are clear and concise.
Definetly recommended.

This book starts off with a very good description of what this book is all about: John and Jane both gross ,000 a year. John gets ,000 after taxes, Jane gets ,000. The difference – John works for someone and goes into work. Jane works at home and gets to deduct her home office expenses.
The IRS allows you to deduct your expenses of maintaining a home office. At the same time, the IRS rules are fairly comples, and home office expenses are often overstated or subject to outright fraud. So the IRS tends to look at them fairly carefully, they have been known to come to your house to see what your office looks like.
This book, updated to be current for 2006, explains the rules as written down, the rules as actually followed and gives you some tips as to what you should, shouldn’t, must, and mustn’t do. Beyond the official rules, which are messy enough, there are more or less unknown rules, i.e. computer software that you buy is written off one way (well actually two or three ways), software you create, either for yourself or for sale, is handled quite differently.
This book is well written, simple to read and up to date with current law.

TurboTax Home & Business Federal + State 2009 + efile Reviews

I have always used turbotax but this year but they changed their pricing. The package says one free state download. True, you can download one state of your choice. However, you only get to prepare one state only. All additional state preparations are at via download of even the same state. Thus for example, you have two family members living in California. The first person downloads the free California state download. If the second family member, who also needs to file the California state return, the second family member needs to pay to turbotax via the software, to prepare the second state return, again, even if it is the same state. Contacted turbotax and it took several tries until they stated that this is the case. The first few times they would not confirm it but rather dodge the question and give an ambiguous answer, not admitting to the change.
1/16/10 update: after installing an online software update yesterday, it seems that turbotax has now changed their policy/software back to the way it was in previous years (probably due to the numerous complaints that they have received). Now, as with last year’s edition, you can do more than one state preparation for the same state, for the one free state that you have download. I have now given it 4 stars instead of the previous 1 star, with 4 stars becuase turbotax, as stated above, tried to previously limit the one free download to also mean one state prep (which is not the case now). Other than the previous frustration regarding the state download problem, turbotax has always given me great results. Great advice/info when you tag the help function. The help function will guide you for whatever is currently on the screen, thus you do not have to hunt for the information.
2/17/10 update
I have still been hearing that some people cannot do more than one state prep for the free included one state download. I have downgraded the star ratings from a 4 previously to a 2 now because the state download/prep problem still exists for some people. If the problem is fixed, I will upgrade the star rating then.
Don’t know if it is real but “Bob Meighan, VP of turbotax” wrote to one of my comments on the deluxe version stating that:
****************************
Bob Meighan says:
Anthony… TurboTax does not charge extra for preparing multiple state returns for the same state. There was no change in our pricing policy this year. I believe if you received a different story from one of our agents, I suspect it was because they probably thought you were referring to TurboTax Online, where you are charged for each return.
Bob Meighan
VP, TurboTax
****************************
Again I don’t know if Bob is for real. If so, I would kindly ask Bob if he could change the turbotax website to state officially, for once and for all, that a buyer of the desktop version shall have unlimited state preps for the same free included state download.
I have also heard from another buyer that turbotax said this was due to a software flaw and should be fixed by Feb 25. We shall see. In the meantime, even though I can do multiple returns on the same state, many others cannot, thus buyer beware.
2/28/10 update:
The problem seems to be fixed. I am upgrading the ratings from 2 stars to 4 now, after it seems to be finally working now. I have received a comment stating that now it is possible to prepare more than one same state return from the free one included state download. Please let us know if it IS or IS NOT working for you.

I have used previous versions for about the last 10 years. All my previous experience was with the “Premier” version. The only reason I bought this version this year is that for some reason, they moved the Schedule C functionality from Premier to the Home and Business version, and thereby increased the price by about for the same thing. That is the only reason I downgraded the product: I feel that they are gouging small business customers with this change, and I think they should correct it by putting this functionality back at the Premier price level.
As for the use of the program, I just downloaded and installed it. Installation was flawless. In a quick overview of the program, it seems to be stable so far, unlike the reviews for the CD version of the same software. I like the new format for “Explore on My Own” to take you out of the guided process and allow easier handling of specific tax topics: Turbotax has always had a similar function — I just like this view of it better than before. The importing of my previous tax year info and personal info was easier and more seamless than in prior versions.
Another reason I came back to Intuit this year was that even though they occasionally have bugs with their products, they stand behind them with excellent tech support. My recent experience with conflicts between Quickbooks and Microsoft Vista and 7 operating systems resulted in numerous hours on the phone with their tech support — they were both persistent and generous with tech support time until they found a work-around to the incompatibilities. Knowing that they take this approach was a huge factor in having the confidence to proceed with their TurboTax product again this year.
