Will Work from Home: Earn the Cash–Without the Commute

work homeEscape the cube. Ditch the commute. It’s not just a dream anymore.

Many people already spend 12 hours a day getting to work, working, getting home from work. Here’s some good news: thanks to advances in technology, acceptance of outsourcing, the trend towards corporate flextime, and other factors, working from home is easier than ever.

• Reseach a product they believe in, and sell it from home
• Start their own business, doing something they love, for a minimal initial investment

With real-life stories, a step-by-step plan, resource guides, and lists of scams to avoid, this is the book that will help readers finally make the leap––and show them that they don’t have to give up their family, creativity, or peace of mind to earn a decent salary.

Undress for Success: The Naked Truth about Making Money at Home Reviews

Review by New Guy: work home

work homeFinally a work at home book that’s written for the 21st century. So much of the other stuff that’s out there is pure junk. This book does as the title suggests, tells the truth.

The three sections of the book deal with home jobs, home businesses, and freelancing (which is really a home business but the authors make it a separate section because in it they cover stuff that only pertains to freelancers like which job boards to use when looking for work, how to document your freelance relationships, how to price your services, etc.).

They cover all kinds of stuff I’ve never seen in another book like what employers hire home-based staff, what they pay, and how to get a job with them. The give specific instructions for how to convince your boss to let you work from home (and offer other special book-buyer-only samples on their web site at http://undress4.success.com). They lay out what ought to be in a freelance contract and how to make sure you get paid for your work. And they offer a neat way of coming up with web-based business ideas and then show you how to go about figuring out if they make sense.

I was so sick of being taken by work at home scams (which they cover in depth in the book) that I was reluctant to buy yet another book about working from home. So I read who some of the people were that gave jacket endorsements and then I went to their web site and saw that they’ve been quoted in all kind of legit places like the Harvard Business Review, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and lots of other. I concluded that these guys are the real deal and now, having read the book, I can say I was right.

Review by Jeff Lippincott: work home

work home

I liked this book. The title could have been “E-work Options” and I think I would have liked the title better if it had been named as such. Of the 35 chapters in this book 7 of them had the term “e-work” included in their titles. I thought the book was well-written. I thought it could have been organized a bit better – a book with 35 chapters simply cannot be well-organized. It is split into 6 parts, but not well. Parts 5 and 6 only have 1 chapter each. And Part 2 had many chapters.

As I read the book I felt like I was reading a high school research paper written by an honors junior or maybe a senior. I won’t say the book is comprehensive, but it does cover a lot of ground. It not only covers working from home as someone else’s employee, but also covers self-employment from home, too. It probably would have been a better book if it had limited its scope to either W-2 or self-employment, but not both.

Although in this Internet Age that we live in it is possible to work from home as someone’s employee, in reality most employers don’t trust letting their workers work at home. And when they do it is usually on an hourly basis where work productivity is fairly easy to monitor. I’m not a fan of virtual assistants (VA). The work those people do is usually worth so much more than what they are paid to do. I always recommend to my SCORE clients to avoid being a VA and instead be an online consultant of some kind. Chapter 14 regarding teaching & tutoring was much more up my alley, but I think the authors were kind of shortsighted. They should have included consulting and coaching in this chapter, too. And Chapter 16 regarding writers was shortsighted, too. Writing as a freelancer is OK. But what about being an infopreneur? Selling information is where it is at today. And creating ebooks and self-publishing is inexpensive and easy now.

So this book has a lot of good content. It could have been better. It could have been made into two books easily. It’s definitely worth a read. It’s just not a masterpiece. 4 stars!

Many legitimate home-based jobs and projects can be found online, but trustworthy guidance is scarce. Worse, with a 56-to-1 scam ratio in work-at-home ads, the terrain is a minefield of fraud.

Nevertheless, customer service agents, researchers, test scorers, tutors, writers, and concierges are just a few of the many people regularly hired to work from home.

A growing number of Fortune 500 companies, including UnitedHealth Group, American Express, and Northrop Grumman, also hire home-based personnel.

In Work at Home Now, you’ll learn:
* The top insider tips on good and bad Google search terms.
* How to find the “needles in the haystack” on Craigslist, Indeed, Monster, CareerBuilder, and other big sites.
* Where the real jobs for mystery shoppers, transcriptionists, and similar part-time specialties can be found.
* Scam-spotting tips that even law enforcement doesn’t know.

Including interviews with hiring managers and successful home-based workers, Work at Home Now is the ultimate guide to finding the work-at-home job or project you want most.

Work at Home Now: The No-nonsense Guide to Finding Your Perfect Home-based Job, Avoiding Scams, and Making a Great Living Reviews

Review by Cathryn Z. Wilson: work home

work homeI’ve been a long-time fan of the authors’ website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I’ve read lots of “work at home” books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst’s and Haaren’s new book doesn’t dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know – where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they’ve checked out every one of the websites, plus they’ve organized the listing into job types (they’ve included categories such as “merchandiser” and “notary” that are more “work FROM home). They’ve even included a category of websites for work in the “adult” industry (if you’re so inclined)!

The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.

All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

work homeI won this book in a drawing. I was planning to buy it anyways because it is written by two very experienced authors. Christine Durst and Michael Haaren are highly qualified individuals who have done some amazing analysis on this fast growing segment of the job market. They have done the research and have included many up to the minute reviews of legitimate work at home/telecommute companies. This book is so very well organized. It takes you through the steps to determine if you are really ready to take on the challenge and rewards of working from home. This book is a great resource for the new job seeker as well as the seasoned professional looking for inspiration and guidance as they consider the logistics of working from home. I would recommend this for everyone.

The Recession-Busting Guide To Making Money Online From Home Reviews

Review by McDuff: work home

work homeI bought this book because I was laid off recently and thought it would offer several simple ways to earn extra income. The book and all of the reviews made it seem like it would be a comprehensive guide to earning money online, so I bought the book. I should have really looked at who was reviewing the book. Several of the reviewers were featured “success stories” in his book, so really they did not give an unbiased opinion or review. The first couple of chapters into the book, it is really not much more than a wordy list. It did not leave me feeling any more informed that I was before buying the book. Many of the things described in the book I knew or could have found out from a free book from the library. Beyond that, most of the ways that he suggested to earn money online involved further extensive education and have volumes of books regarding each subject on how to do thme. One example would be, there is a chapter dedicated to writing SEO for webmasters. It made it sound so simple, but when I researched this further, you need to have a pretty heavy background on writing HTML and a fairly extensive knowledge of creating websites. There are many lengthy books and college courses regarding writing SEO. Many of the ideas require an extensive further education. It is apparent that the author has found a niche and is capitalizing on people’s desparation in a recession.

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series) Reviews

Review by Satia Renee: work home

work homeThis is a timely book–very timely in that some of the statistical data and such will probably become dated before too long. The resources are good but even websites can come and go so anyone who is serious about working from home needs to hurry to get a copy before the information loses its immediate relevance.

With that said, there’s more than enough good stuff here to almost justify the price. The book by arguing for the many reasons someone might want to work from home without glossing over the reality of it. Not everyone is able to work from home because some people simply prefer the interaction of others, want to get away from the house even if it means facing rush hour traffic, or simply have careers that are not conducive to working from home. And those who may sincerely want to do so are not necessarily equipped to do so in other ways–lacking the technology or maybe even the discipline to do so.

Being home all day with the kids may sound better than having to leave every morning for the office but when you have to be on a conference call you’ll still need childcare.

This book does a good job of presenting the arguments both for and against working from home before addressing how to make it happen. No need to work out a way to approach your boss about working from home if after reading the first couple of chapters you realize that you can’t (because your professional role won’t allow it) or shouldn’t (because you really don’t have the right home or personal context to do so).

The book devotes one chapter to approaching your current employer with an argument for telecommuting before moving onto another chapter where finding a job that is telecommuting friendly is offered, including some warnings about work from home scams. The last few chapters are devoted to more practical advice regarding freelancing including an overview regarding how to file taxes along with suggested resources if you need more information.

This is a good book. Is it worth .99? No. At fewer than 200 pages you’re paying too much for not enough information. The same websites are mentioned more than once between chapters if not within the same chapter. If you can spare a couple of hours, go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read it while taking notes. It won’t take you more than two hours to read this cover to cover and get a list of the resources you may want/need. Or borrow it from the library. But it is not worth the hefty price and that is a shame because it’s not a bad book really just not very thorough.

Review by Natasha Stryker: work home

work homeWhat I liked about this book was that it provides advice on how to coax your current boss into seeing the light in letting you work from home. Many books on this topic are of the “quit your day job and do something else from home” school of thought. But I like my job a lot and would like to keep it, I just want to know how to approach my boss the day I get pregnant. I like how the book lets you know what points to hit with your boss that will be attractive to him/her. The key is to make it seem like the best answer, and this book shows how you can begin planning to do it.

In addition to this book you should also research your industry and find out what percentage work from home vs. in office. Having hard stats before you approach your boss will let him/her know you are serious. Make sure you are busting a$$ at work and doing really well before you bring it up. The key is to be a comodity they can’t afford to lose.

I think this book is a great start!

Work@home: A Practical Guide for Women Who Want to Work from Home Reviews

Review by Melissa Woodruff: work home

work homeI haven’t finished this book yet, but don’t know if I will. It may have some good advice, but I don’t know if I can get past all of the religious references in order to find it. If you are not a religious person (and particularly if you are not Christian!), this is not the right book for you. It was NOT clear to me at all that this book was so focused on God and Christianity. If you are Christian, you might like it; I am just annoyed that this was not made clear (I don’t even think it was mentioned) in the book’s description. (Note: If I had read the first reviewer’s comments more closely, I would’ve seen some references to God, so perhaps this was my fault for not reading everything more closely, but I usually don’t have time to absorb every word in a long review!)

Again, the book may have some good information on the topic that was advertised (women working from home), so I feel bad giving it only 1 star. But I just don’t think the advertising and description of the book are accurate or complete and wanted to make sure future purchasers are aware of this before they buy.

Review by L. Steward: work home

work homeThis is an incredible book which simply lays out all the steps for working from home. Whitwer brings up many hurdles women might face that you might not normally think of. Best of all, Whitwer approaches each topic in her book from the perspective of putting God first and getting your priorities straight. She gives a very realistic picture of preparing, transitioning, and working from home. I highly recommend this book!

101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads Reviews

Review by Suzanne M. Levine: work home

work home101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads by Heather Shepard is a great resource for anyone that is thinking about starting an at home business. The benefits of an at home business are growing larger every day and this book shows how one can make a success out of working at home.

The way Ms. Shepard organizes the book makes it very easy to follow and utilize. She takes the reader systematically through the processes of selecting a business, setting up a home office, making a business plan, finance options and advertising. I found the chapter on self-evaluation to be a valuable tool. In this chapter, Ms. Shepard has the reader ask themselves the hard questions to determine if they are truly ready to start their own business and to find out what direction would be the best to take. This aspect of the book shows that it is not a scheme to become a millionaire overnight. Instead, this publication is a serious guidebook shows the reader their strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the book provides the reader with resources to strengthen their skills if they need to.

I feel that this book is not just a guide to starting a business, but also one that is a reference in order to keep a home based business on track. Finally there is a book that gives the aspiring entrepreneur helpful and practical advice in plain straightforward language.

Review by J. Green: work home

work homeWhile the title indicates it was written for stay-at-home moms and dads, almost everyone can benefit from this book. Heather Shepherd designed a book for individuals who wish to supplement their income, while caring for small children and working from a home office. Shepherd spends considerable time focused on the self-evaluation aspect of starting a business. Here, she presents self-evaluation guides, checklists and advice if your skills are weak.

Shepherd supplies charts and questions to ensure individuals choose the correct home-based business. The actual business suggestions are divided into two categories based on start-up costs:

Work From Home At Any Age: A Self-made Millionaire Reveals How You Can Create the Debt-free Business of Your Dreams From Scratch Reviews

Review by Andy Rosenblum: work home

work homeIn the movie classic, “Network,” from 1976, News Anchor Howard Beale makes the following statement. “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell, I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore! Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore! Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” “Work From Home At Any age,” by J J Luna makes me feel like doing just that. I purchased this book, based on the four 5 star reviews touting this to be one of the best books of its kind since the beginning of the written word. Some of the reviews were quite eloquent. Perhaps if the reviewers had written the book, instead of J J Luna, it might have contained some substance. As it stands, it is nothing more than common sense knowledge that anyone over the age of 12 would already be well aware of. If not, everything in the book could be readily accessible on the Internet or at your local library. “Work From Home At Any Age,” author, J J Luna says to “find a niche, exploit it, and make good money.” He has certainly followed his own advice by writing this book. The author is wealthy by over charging for a product that could be summarized in the form of a brief pamphlet. Don’t believe the 5 star reviews you read on Amazon touting this book as a treasured masterpiece. The author is a great businessman and has undoubtedly given away free copies of this book in order to receive the 5 star ratings. Since I actually bought “Work At Home At Any Age,” and read the entire contents in less than two hours, I can say without hesitation that it deserves the lowest rating possible on the Amazon scale. There is one good thing about the book, however. It seemingly weighs less than air, so when you return it to the seller you purchased it from, your postage costs will be quite low.

Review by J. Ttee: work home

work homeReviewer Andy Rosenblum must have been having a really bad day when he wrote that pitiful review about “friends of the author.” The book (now out of print) was later turned into an e-book called “Skip College: Go Into Business For Yourself” and I ordered it from canaryislandspress (dot) com after reading the sample pages on the website. Not only do I think it is worth far more than the small price the author charges, I have seen many favorable references to it on the internet and elsewhere. In fact, I am among the many hundreds, if not thousands, who will buy **anything** that JJ Luna writes! (His current best seller is an e-book called “Invisible Money.”)

From Suits To Sweats: How To Work At Home As A Virtual Assistant Reviews

Review by Tamara: work home

work homeI’m so glad I read this book before I got any farther with my own freelance part time business. I already have a full time job but recently was told to look into freelancing my skills on the side. When I found this book I thought I’d give it a try and I’m glad I did. This book started with an introduction to the skills typically used by a virtual assistant and covered all the necessary steps/information through landing my first client and marketing for expansion. I have no idea if I’ll ever expand but if I decide to, I know I have a good foundation and direction to go in.

Who should read this book? People who are new to the field of being a virtual assistant. People who have started venturing into this a little bit. People who have been doing it awhile but have some glitches to work out. This book covered basic information about things like setting up your office space, managing your day, common problems people have when working for themselves, and self-evaluation. It also had more detailed information about creating your own website and getting a website developer, how to arrange contracts with clients, and marketing considerations. There was a lot of information to think about and consider for myself, but I was happy that I understood it and have a direction to go on for the future.
